Tip o’ the Hat to…
- Irish McIlveen, who played for 53 games in the early 1900’s and was born in Belfast.
- Irish Meusel, who played for 11 seasons most famously for the New York Giants. His career ended in 1927. He had four straight hundred-RBI seasons from 1922-25.
- Joe Cleary, the last major leaguer born in Ireland. Cleary was born December 3, 1918 in Cork. Cleary had an Irish cup of coffee on August 4, 1945 in the second game of a doubleheader, pitching one-third of an inning for the Washington Senators allowing five hits, three walks, one strikeout, one wild pitch, and seven earned runs to the Red Sox as part of a 12-run 4th inning for Boston. Of the 47 players in the bigs born in Ireland, he is the only one born in the 20th century.
